INFO TENTANG SATIN

Assalamualaikum dan selamat sejahtera semua...

Hari ni mama nak share sedikit info tentang satin supaya kita lebih mengenali tentang fabrik yang kita pakai setiap hari.

What is Satin?

The word "satin" refers to both a specific type of weave and the fabric that results from that weave. When discussing the fabric, satin usually refers to a type of woven fabric that has two very different sides. The front of satin has a glossy, smooth surface, and the back has a dull, matte surface. That said, it is possible to buy double-faced satin, which is glossy on both sides. Most satin is made from silk; however, some satin is made from polyester, acetate, rayon, or nylon.

Type of satin:

1. Duchess satin

This type of satin is also known as princess satin, bridal satin, or delustered satin. Duchess satin is on the firm side, which means it's not suitable for slinky wedding dresses. However, duchess satin is perfect for wedding dresses that require a petticoat such as a ballgown dress or A-line dress.

2. Charmeuse

Charmeuse is a fabric used in slinky or flowing wedding dresses. Charmeuse is lighter and more delicate than regular satin.

3. Peau de Soie

This type of fabric is also known as paduasoy or padesoy. Unlike other types of satin, peau de soie features fine cross-ridges.

4. Antique satin

Antique satin is the satin-faced version of fabrics such as shantung or dupioni. While most types of satin look machine woven, antique satin looks hand woven.

5. Crepeback satin

Crepeback satin is interesting because, unlike other forms of satin, its dull back features a wrinkled, crepe-like surface. Some designers prefer to show off the dull, crepe side of crepeback satin instead of the glossy side.

The Difference Between Satin and Sateen

Many brides confuse satin with another type of fabric called sateen. Their confusion is understandable; the two fabrics are very similar.

Whereas satin is made from silk or rayon, sateen is made from cotton. Sateen is woven the same way as satin, but it gets its luster from mercerization, a chemical process, or calendaring, a finishing process involving high temperatures and pressure.

Sateen is usually not as glossy as satin, and the gloss may begin to fade after several washes. Sateen is washable, but satin can only be dry-cleaned, and sateen is a more durable fabric thanks to being made from cotton instead of silk.

It's possible to find sateen wedding dresses, but high-quality wedding dresses are usually made from satin.
